Recall Alert - Honda Philippines Recalls Select City, CR-V, and Jazz

If the two recalls last year which involved nearly every car in Honda's line-up built from 2003 to 2011 due to a suspected defect in the driver's airbag inflator, this time the recall had now included 2012 to 2013 Jazz hatchbacks, 2012 to 2014 City sedans, and 2011 CR-V sport utility vehicles. This voluntary preventive measure campaign aims to remedy this problem before things may arise.

Recall Alert - Mitsubishi and Honda Recalls

With Honda and Mitsubishi issuing vehicle recalls within a span of days, it would be better if they would be published together in one article. The recalls involve Mitsubishi Lancer EX and Evolution models and Honda City and Jazz units for various issues.

Recall Alert - Honda Philippines Recalls Civic, City, Jazz, and CR-V

Last month, Honda had issued a recall involving Accords and Pilots in which it was a preventive measure to avoid any future incident related to a suspected defect in the airbag deflator of the driver side airbag. Now, this preventive measure done voluntarily had also expanded to selected 2007 to 2011 CR-V, 2006 and 2009 to 2012 Jazz, 2006 to 2011 Civic, 2003 to 2011 City, and 2011 to 2012 Insight (2 of them are included, we had no clue who are the owners here). With this involving thousands of units, owners read this one carefully.

2014 was a year to remember, especially for the automotive industry. Lots of exciting introductions greeted consumers and enthusiasts alike. While some names went away (Sentra, Alterra, Teana), some got new bodies (Altis, Mazda 3, City, C Class, X-Trail), and some were new names (MU-X, Wigo, Ecosport, Ertiga), it was the year to be in since consumers have a lot of choices to pick. Honda Jazz - Generation 2.1 (2008-2011)

HONDA JAZZ (2008-2011)

The second generation Jazz gained more room and engines were uprated (no more i-DSI technology). Do take note this version does not carry front fog lamps or paddle shifters for the 1.5 V.

Honda Jazz - Generation 2.2 (2011-2014)

HONDA JAZZ (2011-2014)

Revised for 2011, this version saw the addition of a temporarily sold 1.5 V EX due to the flooding in Thailand that damaged Honda's plant. Other than that, Modulo and Mugen body kits were also made available.

Honda Jazz - Generation 1.2 (2006-2008)

HONDA JAZZ (2006-2008)

A July 2006 update had the line-up simplified (no more fully optioned variant for the 1.3 S) that had the base model axed. Some exterior enhancements were made standard in the 1.5 V with the addition of an iPod capability.

Honda Jazz - Genration 1.1 (2004-2006)

HONDA JAZZ (2004-2006)

Known as the GD model, the hatchback equivalent of the City was first available with a 1.3 engine, with a 1.5 that followed a year later. Do take note that a Full Option model with dual airbags and ABS brakes exist for the 1.3 S, which means that models with these items may be hard to find.

Car Profiles - Honda Jazz

HONDA JAZZ

No more 1.3 engine but you get tons of neat stuff including six airbags and a touchscreen automatic air-con system. While the redesign had more equipment, 1.5 VX+ is priced dangerously. 1.5 V Mugen Limited Edition now available with 30 units for grabs.

The Good: Still the king of versatility, still one of the smartest in its segment.
The Bad: Pricing is kinda dangerous, the competition is also advancing for lesser entry price.

Price Range: P847,000-P1,058,000

Used Car Review - Honda Jazz (2008-2014)

You're graduating and you want your own set of wheels as a present, Myk Belmonte gives you a suggestion.

2008-2014 Honda Jazz

History
With manufacturers getting obsessed in extracting much space in a small vehicle, there are tons of magic tricks here at the expense of compromising one aspect of the vehicle. Honda had done it especially on the part of making the passenger feel at home.

Debuting at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the second generation Jazz became more larger in length, fixed the chassis to a stiff one, and made way for a hybrid engine. The basics which made the Jazz a household name when it comes to interior flexibility. For the second time, it won the Car of the Year Japan award when it was introduced. September 2013 saw the launch of the third generation Jazz in its home market.

Late 2008 saw the arrival of the second generation Jazz to the Philippine market. It gained more length at the expense of a huge price increase (near rivals of the same displacement cost a hundred grand less) but still the benchmark of all hatches, despite the arrival of new entrants. It is available in S (1.3 only) and V (has the 1.5 engine standard) models but special edition models in Modulo and Mugen flavors are available. By the time you read this, a third generation model will be launched in the Philippines by this year.

Value and Costs
You may not need to proceed to a Honda dealer just to get a brand new unit especially changes were minimal (unless you count the color palette updates). Early units would cost P440,000 - basically half the price of a brand new one - while latest models are priced at the tune of P700,000 with units sold from May 2011 onward having a remainder of their warranty. Do take note Japan imported models were introduced in February 2012 having a slight difference in standard equipment while models wearing either Modulo or Mugen body kits were made as an option later that year.

Keeping this baby would not necessitate the need to sell your liver and kidney. When it comes to parts they are obtainable and attainable. A recall that involved units manufactured between September 2008 until April 2010 for their spring which may cause friction and noise in the engine if not performed, may put the engine to failure.

Exterior and Interior
We imagine this: Honda engineers giving the Jazz some growing pills and vola, the length of the vehicle was stretched. The 1.3 models were conservative looking while the 1.5 gets aggressive looking body kits and the base of the overpriced Mugen variant. Besides, the exterior speaks for itself until we lead to the next paragraph.

The famed three cargo configurations are still retained which is a strength. Put the seats up for the humans with some space for their luggage while fold them down for some serious business (which is, ehem, hauling cargo). Control layout is on the logical side, placed within reach of the driver.

Engine
The second generation Jazz gave a new engine technology for the L13A 1,339cc carrying 100hp at 6,000rpm and 127Nm at 4,800rpm: the VTEC technology. The other option is the L15A 1,496cc which dishes out 120hp at 6,600rpm and 145Nm at 4,800rpm. The 1.3 engine, despite having VTEC, would fit the city landscape especially going fast with a full load isn't its habitat. The 1.5 gives you that extra power whenever needed although the engine may get strained, it is less evident.

Driving Impressions
Good thing it retains the driving dynamics the previous model has. It loves to be tossed around the twisties at the expense of a firm ride and noise intruding the cabin. The latter can be experienced when the driver goes fast enough.

Verdict
There is no other hatchback that can balance fun moments and doubles practicality. The Honda Jazz can still acquit itself despite the influx of new competitors.

Used Car Review - Honda Jazz (2004-2008)

For this week, let's go in the smallest side of the automotive chain, sub-compact hatchbacks. Myk Belmonte have featured sedans, compact sport utes, and multi purpose vans and people carriers, but hatchbacks? Nada. But for this day, this will change.

2004-2008 Honda Jazz

History
Hatchbacks are long popular in Europe, Japan, and India in a lesser extent. But in the Philippines, they're not that much popular until the mid-00's. Competitors had been entering and exiting the scene. The People's Car Development Program had the Daihatsu Charade, Fiat Uno, Honda Civic EF/EG Hatchback, and the Kia Pride entering the party. Among the four, only the Kia Pride became a success until its popularity waned after the Asian Financial Crisis. After the PCDP, Volkswagen's local distributor fielded its Golf hatchback but people didn't warm over it. Toyota released the Echo and the larger Echo Verso; the two were not enough to deter buyers since the cash cows are in AUVs and Compact sedans in that period. GM Automobiles Pilipinas brought the Korean car-badge slapped American Chevrolet Aveo in 2004 but the Honda Jazz - released late in the year - became a runaway success for the brand.

It was made available first in Japan in 2001 as the Fit, 2002 in hatchback loving Europe, and the rest of the world in the following year. The Jazz was a product of Honda's rule of "Man Maximum, Machine Minimum". In layman term, the interior must make most of the exterior's size - which is depending on the exterior's dimension. The GD platform also gave way to several vehicles sharing the said platform. These were the Airwave wagon, Fit Atria sedan (locally and in ASEAN market the City), and the Mobilo MPV.

In the Philippines, Honda was not expecting that much with the Jazz back in 2004. But its landslide success paved way to several competitors over the years such as the Hyundai Getz, Kia Picanto, Suzuki Swift, and the Toyota Yaris. It was among the class that got a redesigned version in late 2008, competitors done it years late of it.

Value and Costs
A buyer desiring for a GD Jazz would find these gems from P350,000-P480,000. Of course, this ranges from the low powered 1.3 i-DSI to rice units (which I personally recommend staying away from these). There are second hand "converted" units from Japan that features a conventional automatic transmission and even an all-wheel drive option. Unsuspected potential buyers and even all buyers of different origins should stay away from these units.

Maintaining the Jazz is comparable to its Japanese contemporaries. However, one must be extra careful when it comes to the CVT transmission, especially if the clutch packs were worn out. CVT transmission fluid must be used, not ATF or Automatic Transmission Fluid. The i-DSi engine has eight spark plugs (read, EIGHT!) than the VTEC's ordinary 4 spark plugs, so do take note of that.

Exterior and Interior
Looks can deceive you, as what a popular quote says. It has smaller exterior dimensions that are done cleanly and without fuss. Windows and doors are expansive and blind spots are not there to distract the driver. From the exterior itself, it truly does practice Honda's philosophy of "Man Maximum, Machine Minimum" and does it successfully.

As what the interior contrasts with the exterior, oodles of space treats the occupants inside. The interior has more for the human, thanks to the relocation of the fuel tank located under the passenger's seat. This results to a roomy interior that is friendly to man and their cargo. The placement of controls is typical of Hondas; legible, logical.

Engine
Two engine options are made available to the motorist. An L13A i-DSI engine with a displacement of 1,339cc that belches out 82hp at 5,700rpm and 118Nm at 2,800rpm and a 1,496cc L15A1 VTEC engine utilizing 109hp at 5,800rpm and 142Nm at 4,800rpm. The i-DSI focuses on efficiency while the VTEC (obviously) goes with high end torque. As mentioned earlier, the i-DSI has eight spark plugs (which means two per cylinder, simple math dictates it) and thus, not a good choice for cash strapped buyers. Two transmission choices can be paired with either engine, a 5-speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission that has 7 gears.

Driving Impressions
The Jazz is a pleasure to drive whether on the vast asphalt of SCTEX, the winding roads of Baguio and Bitukang Manok in Quezon, the tight parking slots in SM or Robinsons Malls, or even in the infamous traffic in EDSA or C5. Comfortable at low speeds but it can get firm and noisy on highway speeds, the Jazz is one good city companion and even an all in one too. It can act as a family car and a van on separate occasions without sacrificing fuel economy, maneuverability, and space.

Verdict
This car totally started the hatchback craze in the Philippines. Surely, the Echo went first, but people still flocked to Toyota dealers for more Corollas and Revos. This one is surely a versatile car that can lend to a multitude of functions in one clever and tiny package. Do not let the small size fool you, it can cuddle people of various fits inside a Honda Fit (pun unintended) or Jazz. This combines the comfort of a car with the versatility of a van in a hatchback configuration.
