Toyota Corolla Altis - Generation 10.2 (2010-2013)

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS (2010-2013)

An update gave the Altis two important things for the vehicle: a Dual VVT-i system which gave a boost in power and torque for the 1.6 models and a standard CVT for the 2.0V . Other than that, there are numerous additions to the range.

Toyota Corolla Altis - Generation 10.1 (2008-2010)

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS (2008-2010)

Already on its 10th generation worldwide, the Altis retains the same size but power ratings for the 1.6 dropped. One big news is the launch of the 2.0 model, years after soldering the top model with a 1.8 engine.

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS (2004-2008)

This version received two updates during its run: first in January 2004 which got proximity sensors, sun shades among others and a second one for 2006 which launched the 1.6 S, gaining MP3 capability for all, and a standard six disc changer.

Car Features - 2014 Ultimate Car Guide Car of the Year

2014 was a year to remember, especially for the automotive industry. Lots of exciting introductions greeted consumers and enthusiasts alike. While some names went away (Sentra, Alterra, Teana), some got new bodies (Altis, Mazda 3, City, C Class, X-Trail), and some were new names (MU-X, Wigo, Ecosport, Ertiga), it was the year to be in since consumers have a lot of choices to pick. With the industry hitting the 200k mark, things are getting thrilling.

First of all, this Car of the Year award does not aim any manufacturer and the choices are the opinions of the writers/contributors here. Voting process is done individually to avoid any voting manipulation here.

Every writer/contributor have to pick five cars and rank them from 5 with the highest to 1 being the lowest. Car Profiles - Toyota Corolla Altis

TOYOTA COROLLA ALTIS

Boring image no more, the 11th generation Corolla has evolved to a sportier image while gaining a host of changes including a CVT which is more responsive. The compact sedan which you wouldn't be ashamed of driving.

The Good: Comfortable to ride in, not the plain vanilla it used to be when it comes to styling.
The Bad: Pricey top of the line model. Still doesn't offer anything stand out in the competitive segment.

Price Range: P941,000-P1,451,000

Used Car Review - Toyota Corolla Altis (2008-2013)

Myk Belmonte now features our second compact sedan which now sways for your consideration.

2008-2013 Toyota Corolla Altis

History
If the Toyota Corolla were a politician in the Philippines, it had 10 generations (since the first model was made available during the 60s) serving the country by providing reliable and no frills transportation. Except for the E80 model  sold for a short period, all of them were elected to serve the people. If there was a political dynasty among automobiles in the country, the Corolla dynasty would be one of them.

The 10th generation Corolla was made available first in Japan in 2006 as the Axio with the Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South Africa in 2007 and the rest of Asia and North America in 2008. Export models (those sold outside Japan) had increased in size and now uses the chassis code of E140. Toyota in Japan released the E160 Corolla in 2012, while other countries will have to wait for a few more years.

Replacing the long overdue E120 model, the 10th generation Corolla has its release last March 2008. It drew some mixed reactions since it somehow resembled the outgoing model and in its first year it struggled to sell past the Honda Civic - which beat the Corolla in 1999-2000 and 2006-2008 - until 2009 where it reclaimed the title. There are plans to introduce the E160 by next year as I type this but with discounts and promos popping in and out, this is one indicator that an all new model is coming. Variants include the basic E (this dropped the J trim), volume selling G, and top end V that can be either be sold with a 1.6 or 2.0 (the 1.8 was short lived) engine.

Value and Costs
10th generation Altises can be purchased in second hand prices at the tune of P460,000-P770,000. Do remember that finding a unit sold in September 2010 and later would have a balance of its warranty, so have a checkout on them.

Maintaining one is on the affordable side, with parts being priced lower than the competition. Fuel economy won't result to numerous trips to the ATM just for cash money. If you are a fuel conscious person, go with a mid-2010 or later unit since the manual is a six speed as opposed to the early model's five.

Exterior and Interior
While this generation looked plain, this has an exterior that will age gracefully (which cannot be said with the Elantra's fluidic sculpture). For models prior to the mid 2010 update, non 2.0 ones have a three horizontal bar one while the top of the line, launched in January 2009, gets a mesh grille. The update had resulted to a redesigned back bumper, taillights, new set of rims (for the V model though), and most important, the grille looks more sportier with the 1.6 have three curved lines done in chrome (E and G makes do with their body color) while the 2.0 has a blacked single line.

Inside, to distinguish the lower models from their higher trim counterparts, early models of the 1.6 have grey colored interiors while higher ones beige and glossy fake wood. The update in 2010 had the wood trim upgraded to a matte one for V models, other than that changes are limited to a new steering wheel for all trims. Good thing that materials used are of high quality and the controls are easy to operate. Interior room is exemplary, of course. Paddle shifters that rotate with the wheel comes standard, but only in the 2.0V.

Engine
The basic (and most common) engine fitted among Altises is the 3ZZ-FE 1,598cc which has 122hp at 6,000rpm and 154Nm at 5,200rpm (older models get 109hp at 6,000rpm and 145Nm at 4,400rpm). Next in line is the briefly sold 1.8 V which has the 1ZZ-FE 1,794cc that carries 132hp at 6,000rpm and 170Nm at 4,200rpm and the one that replaced it is the 3ZR-FE 1,986cc which spits out 145hp at 6,000rpm and 189Nm at 4,200rpm. How do they drive? Well, the 1.6 has enough power for the daily commute but going at speeds above triple digits can get the engine at a boomy sound. The same comment goes with the 1.8, but for the 2.0, it deserves its more than a sentence since this is the first time that type of engine was plopped in the Corolla. When matched with the 4-speed automatic, while this has a powerband at 3,400rpm-3,500rpm, the 4 forward gears is uneven that the second gear is short and third is tall. To get decent power, stick to the second but the automatic is willing to step down a gear at half throttle. Those fitted with CVTs have a more behaved engine but anything in the higher rpm range isn't a great experience.

Driving Impressions
Driving experience isn't a strength, with its light steering (which is an advantage inside the city) and soft suspension. Braking in the 1.6 is much better than the one in the 1.8 since the former has a solid feel than the somewhat mushy one on the 200cc higher model. Good thing that NVH levels and comfort are tops, despite the noise from the tires on rough roads.

Verdict
The Corolla Altis suits the passive occupant inside the car with its comfortable ride and roomy cabin. Those who love to race wouldn't appreciate this vehicle since the suspension is soft, handling is dull, and the engines are not rev happy. You want a dependable car for less cash? Check out the Altis.

Used Car Review - Toyota Corolla Altis (2001-2007)

There is a saying that 'your wish I my command', and Myk Belmonte grants it. Want to see a particular used car on this page? Just post a comment and will try to accommodate your request. This car had been requested by Jack Arthur (a schoolmate of mine) weeks ago. So to Jack, here it is.

2001-2007 Toyota Corolla Altis

History
The Corolla had been Toyota's popular and salable model since 1966. Here are some tidbits of information about this popular model. One Corolla has been sold on average of 40 seconds worldwide (that's nearly 2,160 units in a day sold worldwide!). The name "corolla" means small crown in Latin and not a part of a flower. And almost 40 million units had been finding homes since its introduction in 1966. Afghanistan locals do have an abundance of Corolla units in their country in various generations, and most of them are imports from Japan, US, and other nations. America didn't warm over the Corolla until the fuel crisis forced them to. It had nearly outlived other Japanese nameplates worldwide (with the exception of its stable mates Land Cruiser, and Crown)

Locally, the Corolla nameplate needs no introduction. But how did the Corolla Altis badge started? It was in 1999 when Toyota Motor Philippines introduced a luxury variant of the Corolla badged as "Corolla Altis" and competitors had been scrambling to enter the entry level compact luxury category such as the Nissan Sentra Exalta. The added bonus over the "regular" Corolla was a 1.8 liter engine plus luxury goodies (no sunroof included). The Altis name was ASEAN and south Asian market exclusive.

It was in 2001 that the Corolla Altis become a standalone model (the Love Life Corolla was still produced but geared towards the fleet and taxi crowd) and become the model that crawled back the Corolla's nameplate to the top spot (among its peers) in terms of sales, but the Civic took it over in 2006 with its new generation. Variants available throughout its model life are the base J, E (in both 1.6 and 1.8 flavors, with the latter dropped sometime in 2005), G (with options of 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines), and a body kit and sporty mag wheels clad S (added in 2006). Refreshed in 2004 and sold until 2007, where its 10th generation model was launched a year after.

Value and Costs
Those wanting a slightly modern car for less would be happy to know that Altis resale prices are between P260,000-P400,000; which can be an advantage for those seeking a comfortable commuter car at low prices. The Altis had also been a favorite among drag racers, hotel chauffeurs, and even cabbies, so be extra careful on checking those units, since problems can mushroom with them.

Maintenance costs are on the affordable side, with spare parts from the original to third party ones available. The "ZZ" engines are rumored to have oil sludge, but this can be prevented if oil changes are frequently done by the previous owner. The J had black side moldings so do check them if they are complete and scratch free, as these come standard.

Exterior and Interior
Aiming to be an entry level premium compact sedan, the Corolla Altis has luxury car edges that one can mistake it as a luxury car, but with a Toyota badge. From its anonymous looking predecessor, the 9th gen Altis does stand out in the crowd. People who found the ES Civic's exterior a turn off, most of them went to the Corolla Altis.

Typical with all Toyotas, controls are placed where they can be easily reached by the driver and the occupants. One good thing about the Corolla Altis are the gauges location, it is placed where it should be, in front of the driver. Interior does not look cheap but rather feels classy, even on the J variant. Wood panels are abundant on G models.

Engine
Two engine choices had been available on the Altis model range. A 3ZZ-FE VVT-i 1,598cc with 116hp at 6,000rpm and 160Nm at 4,400rpm powering the J, E, S and G trim lines, and a 1ZZ-FE VVT- i 1,794cc that has 145hp at 6,000rpm and 188Nm at 4,200rpm that is standard among E and G variants. Despite having lowly figures on spec sheets, the ZZ engine family feels "bigger" than it is. And these engines put emphasis on wide torque range.

Driving Impressions
If Civics and Lancers emphasize sporty and spirited driving, Corollas specialize towards comfort. Whenever on the "lubak-lubak" roads that the government calls it "roads" or breezing at two way provincial highways, the Corolla Altis provides ample power for the driver while passengers love the comfort brought by the car. Just a caution though, noise can be heard when driven at three digit speeds.

Verdict
In a budget of P300,000 (not including repairs), would you get a same period Vios or a same period Corolla Altis? The choice is yours but personally, I would go with the latter. Why? Spacious cabin and trunk, decent power, safety features come standard, and maintenance is nearly identical with its sub-compact brethren. It's a good value, considering that you get to enjoy extra 300cc of power.
