Used Car Review - Subaru Legacy (2010-2015)
Myk Belmonte's treat for the second day of November, this executive car which you can have for less.
2010-2015 Subaru Legacy
History
Americans love mid-size sedans, in which every manufacturer had to place their bet in which is a crowded market. In fact, the Toyota Camry still sells well since taking the title as the best selling passenger car (overall, the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-Series sells more) in 1997 while the Honda Accord got to snatch the title for just one year, in 2001. With the exception of Mitsubishi and Suzuki who had given up the mid-size sedan market among the Japanese makes, competitors from other brands stayed strong for mostly 20 years plus, and Subaru was one of them.
Since it's 1989 launch, the Legacy had undergone six generations with numerous changes. The fifth generation model that we will be reviewing was first previewed as a concept car in commemoration of its 20th anniversary. Production started in May at the Indiana plant while Japanese sales commenced the same month, together with the related Subaru Outback. A CVT transmission was introduced here, while the wagon body was the last for the nameplate as it was ditched for the next generation.
Locally, this was the second time the Legacy was sold with a sedan and wagon body back to back. Motor Image Pilipinas brought in the fifth gen alongisde the Outback in 2009 as a 2010 model, which utilized a 2.5 turbo engine underneath paired to a 5-speed automatic. The wagon was first discontinued in November 2014 with the entire line-up replaced by the sixth generation the following year.
Value and Costs
This Subaru can be obtained for as low as P800,000 while later models flirt around the P1M range, give or take the condition. This is a good choice for those who want more driving presence and power through a turbo powerplant while having a more premium image that can keep with the various Bimmers and Benzes of the same time.
Compared with its Japanese peers, maintenance costs are on the upper scale due to the presence of a turbo and an all wheel drive system. Make sure to check any electronics especially it is loaded with them, just like any vehicle in this segment. Lastly, inspect if the turbo works fine; if it got shot, replacing it will cost you more.
Exterior and Interior
Outside, it may look somewhat ordinary when compared to most contemporaries but some flanks give resemblance to several German sedans. Twin exhaust pipes come standard, giving the vehicle a more sporty stance. Overall, it is a standout in a sea of bland competitors while having a European flair. Before we leave this paragraph, the frame-less windows were dropped, ending a Subaru tradition.
Unlike rivals from Deutschland, rear space is habitable while overall quality is topnotch. Panels are of the faux carbon fiber and aluminum variety that contemplate the numerous cabin storage spread throughout the vehicle. An electronic parking brake comes standard, unlike the conventional that others offer.
Engine
No V6 engine option yet, rather a EJ25 2.5 4-cylinder displacing 261hp at 5,600rpm and 350Nm at 2,400-5,200rpm. One unique trait is that a turbocharger comes standard, hence the broad torque curve. Enter the powerzone at 2,500 and up with boost coming at 2,700rpm while full blast plays at the 4,000rpm range. Do take note the engine is shared with the Forester XT and Impreza WRX of the same period.
Driving Impressions
Despite being redesigned, the core competence still remains. It still has the fun to drive characteristic complemented with a switch (Sport gives you more fun while Sport Sharp is hardcore) that controls the way you want it. We invite you to have fun behind the wheel but do it carefully.
Verdict
A redesign may be a make or break for a vehicle. Subaru sticked to its guns, by improving the vehicle further while retaining things that made the Legacy known for. If you value space and presence while retaining sports car driving, then this is the pick. While a new model is available, the fifth generation won't disappoint you, we promise you that.

Used Car Review - Subaru Legacy (1996-1999)
Myk Belmonte is giving out our second 90s vehicle feature in the form of a wagon, which now is a bargain nowadays.
1996-1999 Subaru Legacy
History
Subaru made a reputation of making quirky vehicles which were equipped with all wheel drive and at the same time, sturdy. They look pale, until the SVX coupe came along which prompted the brand to make some changes in the vehicle's design.
The second generation Legacy was available in either sedan (both low and high raised, with the latter called the SUS or Sports Utility Sedan) or wagon (this generation gave birth to the Outback) versions. Sales started in October 7, 1993 in Japan with the rest of the world having it the following year. Do take note that the chassis codes differ by body style: BD for sedans, BG for standard wagons, and BK for flat roof wagon.
April 1996 saw the addition of the Subaru brand by Columbian Motors Corporation and the first model to made available is the BG Legacy. It was the only available vehicle in the regular line-up, with the Impreza WRX being available on an indent order basis. Despite the firm having successfully selling the various Kia, Mazda, and even BMW vehicles, this didn't catch up the buyer's attention. It was discontinued in 2000 with the distribution rights handled to GM Automobiles Pilipinas and with Columbian's financial woes back then. There was only one variant available, the GL.
Value and Costs
For those interested in the Subaru Legacy, prices for a second hand unit falls between P145,000-P265,000. This is one practical wagon from the 90s, especially its Opel rivals face difficulty in sourcing parts. Do we see a 90s bargain here? Read on.
Despite being an old model, parts can be purchased at Motor Image in Greenhills. Regular maintenance can be done there, since they know even the oldest of Subarus. The boxer engine is bulletproof and the vehicle wouldn't give up on you if maintenance is done right. The AWD system may consume a little more gas but will give you stability at the worst situation. Paint fading is common, as with other vehicles done in Columbian's old plant in Bicutan.
Exterior and Interior
Even though this is a wagon, sporty touches such as the trademark frameless windows (water does not enter, definitely a good thing) are done to brighten up a dull vehicle. But overall, this is something that we would not discuss further.
Plastics that were used are very far of Subarus of today. Oddly, the controls for the air-conditioning is positioned above the radio but nevertheless, changing stations or temperature isn't hard since they are easy to reach. For more flicking fun, the knob for the AWD system is located beside the parking brake. Space for both people and cargo is adequate despite the propeller shaft tunnel passing through the middle portion. The rear bench can be folded to accommodate more items that are long in nature.
Engine
Only one engine reached Philippine shores in the form of an EJ20 1,994cc carrying 115hp at 5,600rpm and 170Nm at 4,400rpm. Call it conservative (the 626 has 118hp but the engine is fun to drive) but this one is a hoot to drive, that's if you know how to extract the power to enjoy every moment.
Driving Impressions
The standard AWD, less power from the engine, and a long body makes the vehicle something hard to drive for the newbie. With constant practice, driving one is just sisiw (easy).
Verdict
Want a 90s wagon that is easy to maintain? The Legacy is one great choice. With the added security of AWD, as well as good support for spare parts, owning one is easy.

Used Car Review - Subaru Legacy (2006-2009)
It's the first day of 2013 and Myk Belmonte celebrates it by featuring a used car. Make that new year's resolution by buying yourself a new steed. Wait a minute, you do have a minimal budget and want more for less, here is one recommendation.
2006-2009 Subaru Legacy
History
They said that if you want to sell well, you must be unique and different. Let me give you an example in the field of beverages. For the beverage part, Milo and Ovaltine are nearly the same because they are marketed as energy drinks, but the truth is that, Milo is sold as a tonic food drink while Ovaltine is marketed as a nourishing bedtime drink. They're unique to one another but the green-packaged drink sold more due to the name recall. But the makers of Chocquick (whose name I forgot) wanted to get the slice of the market by copying Milo's packaging and logo and offering it at a lower price. That's being unique, but not good for others.
In the world of automobile marketing, being different to the market offerings is the order of the day. Subaru, in year 1989, decided to have its Legacy sedan and wagon to be different from other vehicles back in the day by offering standard all-wheel drive and the famed boxer engine. It was also unique in the market by offering three body styles which includes a sedan, a wagon, and a raised wagon known as the Outback (it became a standalone model in 2000, before it was a trim variant). Different it is, 3.6 million Legacies had been sold from launch to year 2008.
Being different in the Philippines became a disadvantage for the Subaru brand in the 90's, no thanks to its previous distributor in the name of Columbian Motors. It had a versatile body, but poor interior trim and a boxer engine that salespeople thought it was from Luisito Espinosa (he was popular back then, while Pacquiao is a beginner during that time). Times had changed especially with a well informed market and fast forward to 2006, Motor Image Philippines arrived and initially brought the Legacy sedan, with the wagon guise months later. This distributor did much better especially in the aspect of after sales. Sales ceased in 2009, with the BM and BR Legacy replacing it in October of that year.
Value and Costs
Being different while brand new does not equate in being different when it comes to used car pricing. And if want to stand out in the crowd and have a unique car than other competitors, you can own a BL sedan or BM wagon Legacy for just P560,000-P860,000. Interestingly enough, a Camry or an Accord of the same period can be yours at the same price but they do not offer all-wheel drive nor a boxer engine. Bad news is that, you will rarely see these in the online classified websites, which makes hunting fun.
Cost of maintenance is not far with other premium sedans from the Land of the Rising Sun, but having all-wheel drive, it would be better to replace all four tires at the same time. Having no turbo in the engine, you are spared from problems with broken turbochargers which the previous owner abused it. For vehicle parts, you may proceed to your nearest Motor Image dealer and purchase them inside, while prices are not that prohibitive though.
Exterior and Interior
If the previous generation wagon sold locally was plain looking (same goes with the sedan), the BL/BM Legacy looks sharp and ready for the open road. Chrome bits are nowhere to be found since you'll be using it for go, not for show. In fact, the wagon does not look like pang-matanda since sporty lines are there. Word of advise: if you own or planning to buy a Legacy, never ever make salpak chrome trims or it will ruin the car's aura.
The sporty theme continue inside the interior especially that black is the motif with some silver lining, and thankfully, faux wood pieces are nowhere to be found. One unique feature is the frameless doors, which contributes to the sporty ambiance of the Legacy. While the interior uses hard plastics, they are of high quality and won't break with the hard press of the finger. It may look compact outside but the occupants would have tons of room inside, and body roll is minimal thanks to the low center of gravity. If you decide to pick the wagon for the airport run, your three relatives from abroad would be happy to have their luggage (three can fit inside) fit in the cargo compartment. Loading bay is low than an SUV.
Engine
Only one engine that is deprived of turbocharging (there is a turbo option in the same displacement which we had) arrived in Philippine spec Legacies. The sole choice is a 1,994cc EJ20 H4 naturally aspirated with 165hp at 6,800rpm and 201Nm at 3,200rpm. These figures may seem conservative on paper but drive it on the twisted roads, you can feel the power. To people not familiar with a boxer engine, let me explain it. The engine is mounted low to the ground couple it with a low center of gravity, which makes cornering not alarming and the ride less floaty.
Driving Impressions
Sporty driving characteristics is what makes a Subaru unique, and handling one can mistake you for driving a huge car, wherein slotting in parking garages is a breeze. Thanks to the low center of gravity because of its boxer engine, it is well composed and behaved. Despite the presence of a 4-speed automatic transmission (the only choice), it feels responsive enough. They said that if a car is sporty, it must possess a firm ride that the passengers wouldn't like, but the Legacy does not have it.
Verdict
Going against the flow has its advantages and disadvantages, but dealing with the former, the BL/BM Legacy offers the driver and his family the best of both worlds. While the father is enjoying the drive to the beach or the vacation house, the mother need not to worry about the kids complaining about the harsh ride and they can sleep soundly. Now there are two questions, first is would you pick the sedan variant or the wagon version? And secondly, is it ok for me to wait to hunt for a good unit? Well, the choice is yours and happy shopping!
