Car Features - The Best Sellers of 2000

Welcome to the year 2000, where everyone survived the Y2K bug, where the common phone is the 3310, and Facebook hadn't been invented yet. So, I saw this article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer and they revealed the top selling cars of the millennium year (per category). Not all car companies such as GM Automobiles (Opel, Chevrolet) are members of CAMPI, which do not report sales figures. Let us now go to a trip down memory lane.

Used Car Review - Mitsubishi Spacewagon (1992-1999)

Before leaving the month of June, Myk Belmonte reviews a car which went way ahead of its time.

1992-1999 Mitsubishi Spacegear

History
First conceived from the SSW Concept Car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1979, the Chariot (known in its hometown) was placed into production in February 1983 using a variety of names such as Space Wagon, Nimbus, and Expo plus it was also marketed under the Dodge and Plymouth brands using the Colt Vista name.

Our model generation subject of discussion is the second generation Spacewagon which was more longer and taller while remaining in the same footprint making it qualify for Japanese regulations concerning vehicle size and engine displacement. This generation spawned offspring variants including the short-wheelbase RVR and a Korean version named the Hyundai Santamo.

The Philippine market had this MPV in 1992 through a 1.8 carburetor engine paired with a manual transmission. This concept went ahead of its direct (and much roomier rivals) from Nissan and Toyota, so to say that not all warmed on this concept. Until its 1995 update, it remained unchanged until 1999, where it was dropped on the line-up after without a direct replacement. Currently, the category where the Spacewagon used to compete is filled up with various contenders from Japan, Korea, and Indonesia.

Value and Costs
Currently, you may buy one between P90,000 for an early model possessing the carbureted engine to P220,000 for recent examples that carries an EFi engine and an optional automatic transmission.

Maintaining this rare vehicle would not require you to sell your kidney and liver, since parts are interchangeable with the Lancer and Galant of the same period. Pet peeves to look out are the suspension (which is notorious for the kalampag) and the steering assembly, plus check out for wear and tear present in the car.

Exterior and Interior
Staring at the Spacewagon will remind you that this vehicle is a product of the metal and grunge rock era. There is nothing to speak of its outside, but roofrails became standard in a 1995 update and the crystalline headlamps add style to the vehicle.

This is where the magic begins: inside. It can fit seven bodies in a compact body. We warn you immediately about this one, that there is no dual aircon function inside (that competitors do have) which makes passengers complain that it is hot inside plus the third row is cramped and kids are only welcome.

Engine
While the standard engine is a 4G93 1,834cc gasoline, horsepower and torque figures vary from one another in some periods. From 1992 until mid-1995, power is rated at 109hp and 154Nm with its fuel driven through a carburetor system. For those updated units (which can be identified through its three spoke wheels), adding electronic fuel injection resulted to having 115hp at 6,000rpm and 157Nm at 4,500rpm. So, the obvious choice is the later models since they do have enough power to pull the vehicle even when fully laden. Old models are poor picks since no thanks to a carburetor system, it would have a difficulty on speeding up plus it guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow.

Driving Impressions
Since it has a height of a car, driving experience is similar to one. Visibility for a such a small MPV is excellent, with just a few blind spots present. When it comes to driving one, you will have a blast since it can reach triple digit speeds (unless you are passenger and cargo loaded, then performance would suffer) with ease.

Verdict
The Mitsubishi Spacewagon was purely a vehicle which came well ahead of time. A period where people preferred high raised wagons and minivans which can wade through floods. 15 years later after its original launch date, rivals that had more aircon vents and more power of the similar were made available to the public. Unless you really want something small or that nostalgic feeling, check first other rivals which may deem suitable for your needs.

Used Car Review - Mercedes Benz M Class (2006-2012)

A luxury SUV for the school year? Not impossible, says Myk Belmonte as he gives you a suggestion.

2006-2012 Mercedes Benz M Class

History
Ok, so you would be criticizing me for featuring a second luxury SUV during the time when the kids troop back to school. Two years ago, we reviewed the E53 X5 in which people can choose between that or a brand new Montero Sport if given a chance (the results when I asked some people they'll go for a brand new Montero). While the used car world gives you lots of opportunities to drive those creatures without costing your image, there is a part of you which shouts maintenance costs without giving up your kids college funds.

Replacing the W163 M Class that was heavily criticized for its dubious quality is the W164 that was first made available in April 2005 as a 2006 model. Everything in the vehicle was totally new including the 7G-Tronic transmission, active curve illuminating lights, and more dimensions translating to more interior space. For the first time, AMG and hybrid engines debuted in this generation to provide consumers more options.

Locally, the W163 was launched by CATS Motors in December 2005 as a 2006 model alongside the W221 S Class and W245 B Class. Initially, the gasoline model was first made available with a diesel engine being available in 2010.

Value and Costs
Despite being an old model than the GLK, resale values of the M are identical to its small brother but then, the former has a cheaper price tag to begin with. As the drill, going with a pre-owned unit is the order of the day.

With this SUV packing tons of gadgetry inside, checking them one by one if they function well is a must. Also, maintenance costs between its European rivals are at par except for the LR which costs slightly more.

Exterior and Interior
Outside, the design just commands your attention with being overly styled that most competitors commit. The shape that is sculpted has better lines and a raked windshield that aids aerodynamics. AMG Sport models have the requisite AMG body kit with rear spoiler and 21 inch rims (as opposed to the 20 ones in the lower models).

Sad news for people who like placing their relatives at the back row: no more standard third row seat unlike the previous model, it has been relegated to the larger GL Class. Anyways, space inside the cabin is excellent and you'll love the comfortable aura provided by it. The interior is crammed with lots of toys including a button for the sunroof plus tons of hidden storage spaces (including the CD slot behind the COMAND screen). The biggest disadvantage is the shifter situated behind the steering wheel that is small (which you may mistaken it for a cruise control) and the cardinal rules: up to reverse, down to accelerate, and the middle is reserved for neutral.

Engine
Neither engine options that we will mention would disappoint you, so weigh in your requirements between the two. The sole gasoline option is the E35 3,498cc V6 having 272hp at 6,500rpm and 350Nm at 2,800-4,800rpm which provides you a smooth power delivery. On the other hand, picking the OM642 2,987 diesel with 224hp at 3,800rpm and 500Nm that is accessible at 1,600rpm which you will love for its available power and efficiency afforded by it.

Driving Impressions
Not anymore the agricultural tractor of the past, it now behaves as an E Class sedan which is a good thing. While we mention about the smooth power bandwith, its power steering is speed sensitive which means it is easily adapted. Apart from the smooth engine and transmission, all you have to do is to drive.

Verdict
There is nothing wrong with having a luxury SUV to school, unless you are receiving death threats in between. But if you are in the market for one (and you budget really dictates it), there is nothing wrong with the M Class, since this is a more improved model than the rushed replacement.

Used Car Review - Chevrolet Aveo Hatchback (2003-2009)

A hatchback comes under the scrutiny of Myk Belmonte for this week.

2003-2009 Chevrolet Aveo Hatchback

History
Hatchbacks are one important vehicle when it comes to the college landscape, especially some folks (or in this case, students) value practicality in a sense that they will fit tiny alleys without putting a ding to their car. While hatchbacks are tough sell before, they are now accepted by the society thanks to their perceived benefits.

We all know that the Aveo was first conceived as a Daewoo under GM's management. Since we had reviewed the sedan (which is more successful locally) last October, everything under its worldwide history can be seen here.

After the local GM distributor's focus towards gas guzzling SUVs and vans from America and China, its was damn time to launch passenger sedans made in Korea in the name of the Aveo and Optra. The former, the subject of our review, was first available in hatchback guise in late 2003 with a trunked version of it in 2006. Unlike competitors that were either cheaper in price or slightly expensive, the Aveo was glued to dealer floors. Due to disappointing sales, it was dropped after 2009 until the Sonic hatchback filled its void three years later. Variants include the 1.2 L and 1.5 LT.

Value and Costs
Due to its unpopularity in the market plus the low resale values associated with Chevrolets, Aveos can be cheaply picked up in the market. While you get it for less, other competitors from Japan of the same period are better purchases so think many times before committing on buying one.

As mentioned on our Aveo Sedan review, parts availability isn't great and also its fuel consumption. Quality is a demerit, so be careful.

Exterior and Interior
There is nothing to write home about the outside styling, despite some interesting light quirks, fender flares, and even some body kits in later models, this won't make you stand out from the crowd. Until its 2008 update which had a huge grille (that the Captiva possessed later on), the grille was basically one piece that is clean to look at. A way to distinguish the 1.2 from the 1.5 is the alloy wheels, it is standard among the latter models.

Good thing about this hatchback is the cabin, which possesses an upright steering position and easily reachable controls. Do take note that 1.2 models do not have any power amenities (save for the power steering) while 1.5 variants have complete power features. Lest we forget that shifting to reverse is just beside the first gear.

Engine
Let us have a rundown on the available engines of this beast starting with the basic (and what we recommend when buying): the S-TEC 1,150cc with 70hp at 5,400rpm and 104Nm at 4,400rpm. Before throwing us some stones, we say that the 1.2 is a better pick since it is more relaxed although one must be attentive to the noise that the engine produces since a tachometer does not come standard for the 1.2 model. Despite the availability of power amenities in the E-TEC 1,498cc carrying 83hp at 5,600rpm and 128Nm at 3,000rpm, we'd avoid this one since despite an additional 300cc worth of power, the figures are comparable to a Vios 1.3. Underpowered at its best, trashing the available gears to extract every ounce of power is needed plus fuel consumption is much worse for this engine.

Driving Impressions
Driving fun isn't the best thing that the Aveo is known for, but hey you get a comfortable driving position and a composed ride (thanks to the suspension settings). Steering is lifeless at best which is a handy tool when it comes to maneuvering.

Verdict
The used car kingdom gives you tons of automotive treasures that one can obtain for less cash. While the Aveo has some virtues, its apparent weaknesses as well as some superior competitors have dwarfed this choice. Look elsewhere is what we recommend.

Car Features - We Compare the Car Offerings of Philippines and Thailand

We'll start this car feature in which we compare the car offerings in the Philippines as against to several countries in the world. We wouldn't go to the most ambitious markets like the United States, Europe, or even Japan since their markets are way larger than us. Why not we go first to the markets near us, such as our ASEAN neighbors especially we all share the same cars with us plus we get cars from their assembly plants.

In this series, we shall go to our first destination: Thailand. We all know that they love beaches plus the fact it is the hub of most car companies the region. Without further ado, lets go explore some of their offerings (some luxury brands will be skipped) and compare.

Do take note we are evaluating the current vehicles in the manufacturer's line-up. These data are as of June 2014. You make look at their Thailand websites for more information.

Used Car Review - Nissan Sentra (2004-2014)

Hunting for a car this school year? Let Myk Belmonte give you one choice to consider.

2004-2014 Nissan Sentra

History
When it comes to the hunt for the school car, these vehicles are the usual suspects among teeners: Civic, Corolla, Lancer, 3, Elantra, City, Vios, Swift, Jazz, Fiesta, Montero, and Fortuner. During the time when Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal were the KatNiel back then, college students back then were confined to the common Corolla, Civic, Lancer, and Sentra. The latter vehicle is the subject of our review here, especially that this month you'll see your ugly classmates and terror professors which necessitates your own wheels to school and were are giving you a suggestion.

Under the N16 code, the Sentra is sold under the Pulsar, Bluebird Sylphy, and Almera badges through selling life. Much of the description on this paragraph applies in this review.

Although this model runs through the N16 platform, it has been extensively updated including the dropping of the Exalta moniker after its four year usage. What used to be known for its standard sunroof, leather seats, and VCD player was traded for affordability and this one spelled the doom of Nissan in which it sold heavily towards taxi operators. Despite the introduction of the Sentra 200 from Mexico last 2010 and the new Sylphy in 2014, this body style would be still in production albeit in 1.3 guise. Available variants include the 1.3 GX, 1.6 GSX, 1.6 GX, and 1.8 180GT.

Value and Costs
Nissan vehicles aren't known for their stellar resale values, which means picking up a unit will cost you less compared to an established brand of the same vintage. If your parents haven't gave you a graduation gift last March, then this is the perfect car that you can egg them to convince your pops given its low prices. Given its long production run, focus on the vehicle condition especially changes were minimal.

Sentras are reliable vehicles, but it does not mean they are trouble free. Apart from the usual wear and tear, one must check the suspension shocks since it tends to soften up especially if the car is filled to the brim and the MAF sensor inside the QG engines are sensitive to dirt which can decrease performance. Since this car is a taxicab favorite, ex-cabbies are a no-no since their condition is questionable.

Exterior and Interior
Utilizing the same body, more cosmetic changes occurred such as a new grille, headlamps, and tailights that similarly resemble the first generation Teana. Although the changes liven up the otherwise aging model, the efforts are otherwise fine. Before anything else, steel wheels are standard on the 1.3 GX while other models (including the power version of the GX) carry alloys and side skirts come as an option for some units.

Trim levels of this generation of Sentra have varying equipment so lets delve on them one by one. Going to the basic 1.3 GX gives you a CD player (first units have a cassette tuner) while an upgraded model carries all power amenities. The 1.6 GSX will give you an automatic climate control and an overhead console but if you really want airbags and speed sensing door locks, go with a 2007 and earlier unit especially these options were dropped later on. Standard interior amenities for the 1.6 GX are sports jersey seats, alarm system, and keyless entry. The discontinued 180GT has carbon fiber accents (as opposed to the black of the 1.3 models and black and beige motif of the 1.6), and leather seats. The space problem is still there as four can travel in a comfortable fashion.

Engine
The three engine options are still from the QG family and shared among numerous Nissan models worldwide. Your first option (and the most common) is the QG13DE 1,295cc with 95hp at 6,000rpm and 125Nm at 4,400rpm. The second engine that you might encounter is the QG16DE 1,597cc carrying 116hp at 6,000rpm and 149Nm at 4,400rpm and the rare one is the QG18DE 1,769cc having 128hp at 6,000rpm and 176Nm at 4,400rpm. We shall give the rundown on each of the engines here: the 1.3 is decent enough but whines when driven hard (avoid the automatic unless you need it), the 1.6 is balanced but you need to push harder, while the 1.8 has a relaxed personality. So we suggest you to choose wisely based on your requirements.

Driving Impressions
Still the same comment from its Exalta predecessor, the Sentra is at home when driving at long distances. Handling isn't still the best especially it tends to be light but it has the advantage when it comes to maneuvering, thanks to a tight steering radius.

Verdict
School time is fun, but can be frustrating as well; so does the need for you school car. Going to the second hand route gives you lots of options and one that you can pitch in is the Sentra, despite the fact your schoolmates will call you the dakilang taxi driver. But hey, who cares since you have a car and they don't. Happy shopping.
